Mathematics Placement Test (Mathematics Assessment)

To obtain a degree at UMass Boston, you need to demonstrate proficiency in mathematics by fulfilling the quantitative reasoning requirement, which depends upon your college and your major. To register for any math course through Calculus I (Math 140) you must score high enough on the appropriate level of the math placement test. The mathematics placement test is required of all incoming undergraduate students EXCEPT:

  1. Liberal arts students receiving transfer credit for college algebra or higher, who do not intend to take more math classes.
  2. Sciences or management students receiving transfer credit for calculus or higher.
  3. Nursing students receiving transfer credit for statistics.

To register for any math course through Calculus I (Math 140) you must score high enough on the appropriate level of the math placement test. And to obtain a degree at UMass Boston, you need to demonstrate proficiency in mathematics by fulfilling the quantitative reasoning requirement, which depends upon your college and your major.

This is very important: In order to keep the math transfer credits you matriculate with, you must take the correct test. And your score must place you in a course higher than the one(s) you have transferred. If you register for a course at or below that level, you will lose your transfer credit.

The test is offered at four different levels. During assessment you’ll be asked to select the test level which best matches your math preparation.

The math placement test takes about 90 minutes. New students typically take it as part of their assessment during orientation (see First Steps). Or – along with continuing and non–degree students – they may take the math placement test on a walk–in basis at specific dates and times scheduled throughout the year.

Calculators are not permitted during testing. And students may not take the math placement test more than twice in a 30 day period.
