Freshmen: First Steps

New Student Orientation is a must for all incoming freshmen. This is a two–part program.

Part One lasts about three hours and includes:

  • Skills Assessment. You’ll take two placement tests, one for reading/writing and one for math. These will help identify the courses you’ll need to take to strengthen your reading, writing and math skills–vital for university–level study in all majors.
  • Preparation for your academic advising session, which happens in Part Two, and signing up.

Part Two is a two day program to give you the best possible transition into UMass Boston campus life. It consists of a general orientation and your academic advising session. This is when you register for classes.
