Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility requirements vary from program to program. As you explore programs, look closely at their requirements with respect to:

  • Age/College Level Most study-abroad programs require applicants to be at least a sophomore and at least 18 years old. A few allow freshman applicants.
  • GPA The minimum GPA usually ranges from 2.5 to 3.0; a few programs have more stringent requirements.
  • Language Applicants must have a strong command of the language they plan to take university-level courses in. Most programs require at least two academic semesters of the language spoken in the host country or region. Language-learning programs accept students at all levels, however. There are also many opportunities to study in countries where the native language is English, or the program is in English.
  • University Some college- and university-sponsored study-abroad programs are open only to students from that institution.
